Did you know that you do not need a referral to go and see a Physical Therapist.
The laws have changed in Oregon and most other states, but I continue to get calls weekly and most people still believe you need to see your physician prior to coming into Physical therapy. So, this topic seemed blog worthy! “Direct access” is the term that refers to the ability to go to a Physical Therapist without a referral from your physician (or other medical provider).
Can I use direct access?
In Oregon the answer is mainly…Yes. However, the answer depends on your insurance. Medicare and Medicaid insurances all require a referral from your medical provider. Most commercial insurances allow for “direct access” and it is always a good idea to call the number on the back of your insurance card to find out. Anyone can come to Physical Therapy without a referral if they pay out of pocket.
What is the benefit of direct access for myself…you might ask…?
Direct access is one step less for you and may save you money in unnecessary fees in seeing your medical provider especially if your condition is one of a musculoskeletal nature. Having quick access to your physical therapist can often be the difference between your condition being acute or temporary vs chronic in nature.
